In sharp contrast to the quiet, majestic Tall Ships that sailed into Fairport Harbor in early July 2016, later that month Cleveland Construction hosted the Race World Offshore’s Mentor Super Boat Grand Prix race at Mentor Headlands beach.
Teams from around the world participated in the race driving world-class multimillion-dollar offshore powerboats capable of reaching speeds of up to 200 mph. These competition boats are supported by professional staff and crew from a dozen different countries and race a 4-mile looped course.
The event, also known as the “Roar Off the Shore,” drew large crowds to Headlands Beach as well as hundreds watching from boats on the lake. Truly incredible machines, these powerboats generate enormous speed over water and with it an incredible amount of noise and excitement.
At the lighthouse, we had a bird’s eye view of the races. It was exhilarating to watch the massive boats circle the course over and over, but ear protection was definitely needed. The winners of the 2016 races can be found here.
Editor’s Note: The races were held again in 2017 and 2018.
